Today I read an article written by Wendy Rhodes that was posted onto the Florida Headline News called Coronavirus Florida: Monday’s open for haircuts and a little shopping. The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform the readers about what the Gov. Ron DeSantis’ plans are to reopen beaches and some business buildings like restaurants, barbershops, and retail stores. One quote pulled from the article would be “Due to exceptionally high rates of infection, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, which collectively account for about 58% of covid 19 cases statewide…” The quote talks about  the covid 19 cases that have been confirmed in the counties that the governor is thinking of opening public places. I think that the governor is planning on reopening to stop some of the protests that have started by people who want public places to open up again.

While searching through the news I saw an article written by Austin Horn that was posted on the National Public Radio called This Editor Turned What A Sheriff Said Was ‘Not News’ Into A Pulitzer-Winning Series. The article is about a man named Jeffery Gerritt who is an editor of the Palestine Herald-Press who wrote about the deaths of inmates in county jails. One quote I pulled from the article is “That series of stories won Gerritt and the Herald-Press the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Editorial Writing.” The author wrote this quote to inform how Jeffery Gerritt won the 2020 pulitzer prize by writing the story about Rhonda Newsome which led others to her story and the story of many others in county jails. I feel that the wardens and officers who work at the jails are doing wrong when they don’t share the prisoners’ deaths.

The article I chose to read is called Trump and right-wing media distract from bad virus news with alternate reality which was written by Oliver Darcy and posted on BBC Business. The article is written to inform about how the covid 19 pandemic might affect president Donald Trump’s plan to get reelected in the up and coming election and how the president and the news might be creating an alternate reality to distract their fans from what is really happening in the world. One quote from the article that caught my eye is “…the right-wing media plunge their audiences deeper into it, Miller explained, adding, The result is that President Trump gets to live in an alternate reality of his own choosing.” The author writes this quote to show how the media tries to avoid discussing what the world is going through right now to aid Trump in creating his own alternate reality.

Today I read an article called More businesses, outdoor areas and beaches can open under new L.A. County health order with no end date which was written by Marissa Wenske and Courtney Friel then was posted onto KTLA 5. The article is written to inform that new orders have been passed in Los Angeles that allow Beaches, more retail stores and outdoor recreational areas to reopen while still maintaining many “virus related restrictions” for at least another few months. A quote from the article that caught my eye while reading was “On Tuesday, county officials indicated some virus-related restrictions would continue for another three months.” The author  writes this quote to inform readers about the terms of the orders that LA county health officials. I think that though the orders might please many of the protesters’ orders it will only bring risks to the table.

While looking at the news today I read an article called Russia Khachaturyan sisters: Investigators refuse to drop murder case which was written by Sarah Rainsford then posted onto BBC News. The article was written to inform readers about a crime committed by three sisters who were then arrested back in 2018 and how investigators have been refusing to drop the murder charges. A quote pulled from the article that caught my eye would be “The general prosecutor’s office concluded earlier this year that the Khachaturyan sisters had been subjected to prolonged physical and sexual abuse.” I chose this quote because after reading it I understood why the sisters decided to commit the crime though there might have been other ways to justify what happened to them.

Today I read an article written by Colette DuChanois which was posted onto News 4 Jax called Duval County beach restrictions to be lifted; zoo to reopen. The article is about Lenny Curry who is the mayor of Jacksonville, Florida and his plan to reopen some beaches and a zoo. During a virtual news conference, Mayor Curry said, “While this is a positive step, I continue to urge people of Jacksonville to be cautious and responsible, and continue to practice social distancing…” The quote from the mayor’s virtual conference shows that though his plan to reopen public areas might pose a risk he will still be enforcing the use of social distancing procedures. I think that though this will certainly release some of people’s stress that they might have collected in the past two months it will also be a risk, but is still much needed.

The article I read today is called China ‘copycat’ buildings: Government clamps down on foreign imitations that was posted onto BBC News. In the article the author talks about the government’s statement on the many “copycat” buildings that are spread around Chinese cities. A quote from the article is “A government statement says ‘plagiarizing, imitating, and copycatting’ designs is prohibited in new public facilities.” The quote talks about how the government commented on recreating buildings from foreign places like English towns, Alpine villages, and the Eiffel Tower. Another quote is also part of the statement that says “buildings reveal a city’s culture.” This quote is the reason why the government has begun prohibiting copycat buildings. What they build should reveal their culture and if they build foreign buildings they are showing only other countries’ culture. I think that I agree with the government’s statement and why they think that it would be better to build based on their culture.

The article I read today is called Armed black citizens escort Michigan lawmaker to capitol after volatile right wing protest, it is written by Lois Beckett and was posted onto The Guardian. As the title suggests the article is about the state representative Sarah Anthony and why she had armed citizens escorting her to her workplace at the capitol. One quote that caught my eye is when “Lynn said he did not want to see a black woman who had been elevated to political office feeling threatened ‘because of the white supremacists in the yard.’” The quote from the article shows Michael Lynn Jr who was one of the escorts saying why he decided to escort the member of the house of representatives. I think that Michael Lynn Jr was doing good when he decided to escort Sarah Anthony to capitol.

Today I read an article that was posted in the U.S. News by the associated press called Ted Cruz getting a haircut at a salon whose owner flouted orders. The article informs readers about how state senator Ted Cruz got a haircut from a salon whose owner broke the orders to close her business. One quote from the article that caught my eye is “President Donald Trump also came to Luther’s defense Friday on “Fox & Friends” and called her “an incredible representative for a large group of people that want to do the same thing.” This quote from the article caught my eye because I have heard many people talk about how the president wants to get more people affected by the virus and if this is true this might support the theory. I think that this was a nice experience for the salon owner for have been supported by the mayor and even the president.

Today I read an article that was posted in The New York Times by the associated press called Mexico’s government is hiding a huge corona virus toll, especially in the capital: Live Updates. The article was written to inform about how the Mexican government might be lying about their death tolls by ignoring hundreds or maybe even thousands of deaths. A Quote from the article that caught my eye is “Doctors in overwhelmed hospitals in Mexico City say the reality of the epidemic is being hidden from the country. The quote is what many of the doctors said about what the government is doing to keep their covid-19 death tolls a secret from the public.

The article I decided to read today is called “Gov. Sisolak announces a stay-at-home order extended until May 15” which was written by staff at 8 News Now The article talks about how Nevada’s governor, Steve Sisolak, extended the stay at home order until May 15th instead of April 30. Something that caught my eye was that he also said the new directive would ease some restrictions starting on May 1st. One quote from the article would be “The easing of restrictions will apply to outdoor and recreational activities, as well as small businesses. This includes all retail businesses, drive-in services, and other outdoor activities.” The quote from the article explains what restriction will be eased on May 1st. I think that what the Nevada governor decided to do wasn’t such a bad idea since staying home for a little longer couldn’t harm them and plus people would still be able to go out since some restrictions would be eased.

Today I read an article written by Minyvonne Burke which was posted on NBC News called “4 Arizona women arrested after missing mom is found dead”. The article explains what is known about the kidnapping and death of a mother of three children from Phoenix, Arizona called Melissa Valenzuela. A quote from the article that caught my eye is a statement taken from a police officer that, “all four suspects were seen arguing with a woman who matches Valenzuela’s description on the night of March 17.” This quote shows evidence which enforces the fact that the four suspects are indeed guilty. I think that if the four suspects, which are Mercedes Gomez, Christina Gomez, Melissa Servin and Nadine Chavez, didn’t kill the victim they at least had something to do with the case because after all one of the victim’s brother say the bathroom in their home was covered in blood and missing tiles.

The article called Maine restaurant owner tells Fox News he plans to defy government orders, open May 1 was posted on News Center Maine and was written by Griffin Stockford. In the article Stockford explains what a restaurant owner from Maine told Fox news he was going to do on the first day of May. One quote found in the article is a statement from the restaurant owner (Rick Savage) where he says, “I’ve got a restaurant that seats 250 people inside, a deck that seats a hundred, a 2200 square foot patio, so I could put people at six-foot spacing everywhere and get open back up for business.” In this text form the article Savage tries to explain why he should be able to open his business back up by showing that even though people have to stay six feet apart his building is big enough to respect that restriction.

Today I read an article which was written by Choe Sang-Hun called Kim Jong-un Resurfaces, State Media Says, After Weeks of Health Rumors and posted on The New York Times. In the article Sang-Hun writes about Kim Jong-Un’s previous absence in his country and his presumed recent return to his post. The author of the article also writes, “Kim missed the state celebrations of his country’s biggest holiday on April 15. On that day, the North marks the birthday of his grandfather Kim Il-sung, the country’s founder.” The quote suggests that  Kim Jong-Un might have been in a lot of danger to have missed both of these parties since one of the parties are his grandfather’s birthday who founded the country.
