Parasite

A movie that I’ve watched during this quarantine is Parasite. Everybody was talking about it last year, so I decided to give it a try. It is a Korean tragicomedy that won an Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film. In the movie, it depicts the symbiotic relationship (and wealth disparity) between the rich and poor. The rich representing the Park family and the poor representing the Kim family. Throughout the movie, the Kims try to infiltrate the Park family’s household and exploit their desire for luxury servicesby becoming their new employees. The title, “Parasite”, is a reference as to how the Kim family climbs the social ladder by leeching off the wealth of the Parks and their household. My expectations were high since everybody was raving about it last year (plus the large amount of Academy Awards it won), and I am glad to say that it indeed met those expectations. It was a perfect mix of drama and comedy and I really enjoyed all of it from start to finish.

Should Teachers Carry Guns?

Should teachers carry guns? Lately, there’s been debates on whether teachers can carry these weapons around in schools and in their classrooms. With all the shootings around the nation, people are starting to think that teachers should start carrying guns around to protect themselves and the students. However, teachers should not carry guns onto a school campus.

It just adds grease to the fire. Countering guns with more guns does nothing but adds to the gun violence. Plus, many things can go wrong. For example, what it a student gets a hold of it? Or if a teacher is mentally or emotionally unstable? There is just too many bad things that can happen. And of course, how will the students think about the teacher? As a student, I wouldn’t trust any of my teachers with a gun; it’ll give me an uneasy feeling. These are just some of the many reasons why teachers shouldn’t be allowed to have guns.

A simple solution to end gun violence is to ban all guns. Now, there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who would say otherwise, saying things like “Oh, I need them to protect myself!”. Absolute nonsense. Isn’t it a bit weird that they say they need guns to protect themselves, yet the U.S. is the most homicidal country in the world because of guns? According to Vox, the U.S. has had more than 1,600 mass shootings ever since the Sandy Hook shooting. Sounds unbelievable, but it’s all true. Another study from Mother Jones shows that the States that have more guns, have more gun-related deaths. Data also shows that States with tighter gun policies, have less gun-related deaths. It’s not all a coincidence people. With all of these statistics, it’s hard to deny that guns, in general, are bad.

Overall, I don’t think teachers should have guns. The risks are well too high and the facts clearly shows the negative impact guns have on us. Chances are you’re scared of a shooting happening at your school and that any solution seems like a good one, but people must look at all of the details. We have the power to take away guns, yet people still cling on to them like they pay their bills or something. If we give teachers guns, nothing will get done and preventable deaths will keep occurring.
